Wish List / Re: Control Curves
« on: December 16, 2014, 01:35:14 AM »
Glad to hear - the Quest is a fun machine to roast on!

Yes, my plans actually account for both. Programmatically speaking, curve events would have a internal switch, something like "Dynamic" or "Static". Dynamic events could be temperature-driven and defined beforehand, in a new curve or a curve template. Once the temperature is triggered, an alert would be presented. The event could then potentially become a static, time-stamped marker on the curve at the point in which it happened, and display as some type of tappable note or pin icon on the curve.

This would allow you to create your own time-stamped notes on a curve during a roast, or have them automatically created on the curve based on temps. Those markers would then, of course, travel with that curve to future profiles and such.

For events you create before-hand, I envision a simple setup screen that includes a control for the action to be taken with that event when the temp trigger is met, with choices such as "Alert", "Create Marker" and "Both".

This is great stuff!  Looking forward to having my skills grow with RM and Quest.  Artisan, eat your heart out!   ;D

Hi Danny!

Good stuff on the alerts!!  Would your thoughts also run along the lines of labeling certain parts of the curve either manually or automatically?  Such as labeling "Drying Ends" at 150C.  You can click on a node in analyzer and see where you hit 150C, but no way to identify it.

Might be good to see how long the drying phase is and then see how long you did for your ramp.   Time spans like you have when you click First Crack to dumping. Something along those lines.  I finding analyzer very useful in trying to fine tune my next roast, but it's manual.  Hope that made sense.    :)

Having a blast with RM and my new Quest.

Thanks!

Wish List / Control Curves

Hi Danny!

With heat and fan control curves, the node are created by elapsed time (i.e., Fan 4.5 at 4 minutes)  Is there a toggle to allow by a given temperature? (i.e. Fan 4.5 when temp hits 150C).  Sometimes I find when I do roasts that it can be 30 seconds to a full minue off the recipe fan/heat settings.  Just a thought!

First roast done!  I'm looking for feedback on improving from the first.

Equipment:
Quest M3
BlueTherm Duo with Erics thermocouples (BT and MET monitored)
Roastmaster with Datalogging option.

This was my very first roast ever and like most, had concerns.  I had a couple false starts with RM.  I guessed that I should warm up the roaster FIRST before starting RM.  Which lead me to a few observations.

1.  The profile called for a "15" at the start for warmup but the needle only hit between 10-15 on the AMP readout.
2.  The  MET got really high in relation to the BT.  It was above 260C during warm up.  Should that be a cause for concern?  Instructions say not to let an empty drum get above 250C.

I hurried the drop in at about 219C when it called for 226C.  Guess I got a little worried about the high temp.

As you can see from the graph, my curves were way off from the target curves.  the MET was really off.

I really didn't know when to end after the first crack started.  The popping sounds were just starting to come to an end.  I then cranked up the fan and turned down the heat.  Fired up the microwave vent too as there was a fair bit of smoke.

Beans cooled off in short order and I put them in a valved bag.  Anyway, looking for feedback on how to improve from here.

Hello.

Good choice on the Quest! Yes, you are correct. Just two parts: 1) Roastmaster/iPad, which communicates wirelessly to 2) Quest/Bluetherm/Probes.

Phidgets would afford the possibility of a third probe. Some people run 3 - I only run 2, and truth be told, I never even look at my second probe - I only pay attention to the BT. For me, all I need to know can be more easily ascertained by knowing the relative charge of the drum, and employing the temp projection markers in Roastmaster. Your mileage, or course, may vary.

Long story short - the Bluetherm Duo works great for the Quest. I got my fittings from Eric as well - I opted for the drilled M8s, because I swap probes a lot, and wanted to keep that process hassle-free.

Anything else? Beyond RM, iPad/Phone and the data logging option... just beans. :)

Let me know when you get the hardware - I'll send you a couple of profiles to get you started.

Danny

Thanks Danny!

While I have not even roasted yet, everything I have been reading points to just really needing two measurements. BT and MET.  So the two that the Bluetherm offer is perfect.

The ability to remove the probes is a big plus as I want to be able to set up quickly, roast, take down and put away.  Wires running everywhere does not lend well to small footprints and quick set ups

Couple questions about the workings of Roastmaster.  I have an iPhone 6+ and an iPad, if I was to have RM on both devices, could the database sync beween the two or is it one device or another?  Second question, how large of a library would you have to have to start to take notice of space on a iOS device?

Thanks and I will let you know when I am up and running.  With luck, hopefully by end of the year.

Hi there!   I will be a new roaster and I'm looking at the Quest M3 as the first.  My intention is to keep the footprint down as much as possible.  I plan on buying EricS's, Omega probes for BT and MET readings.  I am familiar with Eric's work as I have a thermometer for my Rocket Giotto.  Works great.

I've looked at the Phidgets option but there appears to be a lot extra items to purchase.  I am now looking at the Bluetherm Duo for the solution.

If I read correctly on the Bluetherm Duo, the chain would be:  Roaster --Probes--Bluetherm--wirelessly to iPad/Roastmaster.  Is this correct?

What are your thoughts on the Quest, Bluetherm Duo combination and do I have to get anything else to get it up and running?

Thanks and I look forward to getting up and running with Roastmaster.
