Support / Re: Probes are offline???

Hi, thanks for the response.

I'm using 2.1 at the moment.

I think I'll hold off on the update. I found my old iPhone 4, which still had the old Roastmaster app (before the update), and it works awesome. Thanks. I will return when the iPhone 4 poops out on me.

Support / Probes are offline???

Ever since the last IOS update, I cannot get a temp reading on the K type thermocouples. I've encountered this problem in the past, and somehow it worked after restarting my laptop, and it didn't have problems afterward. But now it's doing it again, and restarting multiple times to both the phone and laptop has not solved the issue.

The original Roastmaster ran smooth. After all the new updates, I keep getting three error messages on startup (Probes are offline), but I just press OK and then press Add Curve to link up the probes. But whatever, I was willing to overlook it since all I really needed was the temp readout.

But now there's just a question mark next to the temperature. I have two K type thermocouples. Both are simultaneously giving me question marks so I don't think it's a problem with the probes. The USB attachment is also functioning; it makes a noise when I plug it into the laptop. Also the Phidget software is live. My laptop is running Windows.

Alright, at last, I found a thread that addressed the same issue I had.

I tried changing the port on the Control Panel to 5050. Didn't work.

However, the firewall rule trick did the job.

The only other thing was rewiring one of the thermocouple probles, because one of them had severed from the Phidget. I forgot how tricky that part was, and remember being extremely careful with the handling of the phidget. After five years of moving all over the place, I forgot how precarious the wiring was... anyway, I'm glad I finally got everything set up. Can't wait to start roasting tomorrow.

When I double click Phidget Temperature Sensor 4-Input, I get an errror saying that Thermocouple 3 reported a potential of 83.3 mv which is above the maximum 77.4.

Also, when I click on Probe 1, I get a temperature readout on the Control Panel, so I guess the probe is working. But the other ones... 0, 2, 3 all give me Err.

I tried installing the most current Phidget version, assuming maybe there was a Roastmaster update since the 12/01/14 version and thus I needed a newer Phidget version...

But alas the probes are still unlinked...

Alright, so I'm really confused at this point.

I have individual serial stickers on each K probe. I'm assuming these are not the serials that need to be entered into the Roastmaster app, because when I do, nothing happens. They remain unlinked.

There's another serial when I open the Phidget control panel... but there's only one. And when I enter it for one of the probes, the Roastmaster app immediately freezes. So I'm getting the feeling this serial is allowing the signal to be picked up, but for whatever reason, instead of the app saying the probes are linked, it just freezes and I need to restart it...

The other thing is, I tried inputting the same serial on both probes, and the app would not allow it, citing a conflict. So then does that mean one of the probes I have is dead? Because the Phidget CP only shows one Serial under Device... but then it indicates the device as Phidget Temperature Sensor 4-Input... so I'm really confused.

So I noticed the version 8.0 was released on 12/1/14, so I downloaded the Phidget update predating that... 2.1.8.20140924

Now I could get the window of the Control Panel to open by double clicking, so that's resolved.

But now I have  another problem.

Question, what serial do I enter into the Roastmaster app? There's a serial when I open the Phidget Control Panel, and there are individual serial stickers affixed to each Thermocouple. I assume it's the serial displayed in the CP, because as soon as I entered it for one of the Probes, my Roastmaster keeps freezing and I have to shut it down. I do not however know how to get the Roastmaster to run anymore... I guess this means the Phone is picking up something. I just don't understand why it's freezing up the app...

Was navigating the website once more and I realized the Phidget download suggestion page might be outdated... because the latest suggestion is for a version of 7.0... but then on the front page, it announces the latest version of Roastmaster (which I assume is the version I downloaded) is 8.0.

Is there a new Phidget version I need to download?

Hi, I'm a bit daunted by the task of reinitiating myself with Roastmaster and the probes.

I originally purchased the K-type thermocouples and the Roastmaster app about five years ago, and I remember having issues starting it up even then so this is not new territory for me by any means. It's been a while, so I don't know how I got the darn thing to work, but here I am again. I cannot figure out how to link the probes.

I wish there was a Get Started - Link the Thermocouples to the computer + iPhone page at the top of the website, as I've always considered it the biggest hurdle, alongside purchasing the right parts. But once again, I find myself scouring the website for bread crumbs.

Anyway, I have two problems. First problem - the Phidget Control panel will not open. Yes, there's a small icon on the bottom right corner of my lame Windows desktop, but I cannot physically get a window to appear. Apparently, the icon says it's running, but I don't know if I'm supposed to open the window and input something for the darn probes to link up. I remember the last time, the Control Panel window did open, although once you set it up, you never had to touch it again. You just had to make sure it was open to run Roastmaster. Maybe I downloaded the wrong Phidget for my PC. I'm on Windows and I downloaded the latest version suggested on your website, because I also downloaded the most recent version of Roastmaster...

Secondly, I don't know if I'm properly set up. Yes, I've hooked up the Phidget to the laptop via USB, but how does the iPhone come into play? Do I need to turn on Blue Tooth? How does the Phone detect whether or not the probes are linked? Does it detect it by WiFi? I get the feeling I'm missing a big step here. Maybe there's a cable that I lost that's supposed to link to the iPhone??? So far, the laptop is linked to the Phiget by USb, but that's it...

Thirdly, maybe the Phidget is broken... I don't know how you'd ever know. Gah... I have a headache.

Nevermind... crazy. I turned off the Phidget software, and now it's picking up the temp on my Roastmaster app via iPhone. I guess it can't pick up when the software is open? super strange... thanks Danny!

Hey Danny, still dealing with unlinked probe issue.

So it's funny, because as soon as you updated Roastmaster, the probes were linked, and everything was great... for a day. Then my new laptop broke, so I had to return it for a new one.

Since receiving my new laptop (same model), I've ran into the same issue. I don't know what I did differently the first go round, but it's not working again. I have the latest Phidget software and latest Roastmaster update. What gives?

And now when I double click Phidget Temp Sensor 4 input, it gives me the following error log... which I didn't get before...

Saturday, July 20, 2013 12:30:23 AM: Input 2 reported an undefined temperature. Probably there is no thermocouple plugged in.
Saturday, July 20, 2013 12:30:23 AM: Thermocouple 2 reported a potential of 83.3803mV which is above the maximum of 77.4104mV.
Saturday, July 20, 2013 12:30:23 AM: Input 3 reported an undefined temperature. Probably there is no thermocouple plugged in.
Saturday, July 20, 2013 12:30:23 AM: Thermocouple 3 reported a potential of 83.3047mV which is above the maximum of 77.4104mV.

I've also tried inputting different serial numbers.

I'm assuming I need to enter the serial number for the Phidget, not the serial for the respective TPK probes... anyway, I tried both with Port 0 and neither worked.

So I've searched the forums and found this problem referenced by other users, but unfortunately, I could not troubleshoot the unlinked probe from my setup.

Currently, I'm trying to link SBC3 to my iPhone 5, and although from the Phidgets control panel, it says that I'm running, my iPhone will not register the probe so I can't start the roast. Gah, I'm so excited and anxious to get this thing finally rolling, but it seems once again, I've stumbled upon another hurdle...

Also, is there a way to delete a Probe profile? I accidentally entered the wrong serial number for one of 'em, but both are named BT. I couldn't find a way to EDIT the established profiles, nor delete... so I have two folders named BT, and I can't tell which is which because it won't let me access the details... is the newer one up top?

Once again, thanks for helping me out!

PS: I've also tried restarting the laptop, and it didn't do the trick. Also tried closing and reopening Roastmaster app, and that didn't work either.

Danny, fortunately Eric was very quick to reply!

I have already sent the payment of $86 (80 for 2 adaptors + 6 shipping). Just gonna wait for them to finally arrive and get this thing started.

BTW Eric recommended I purchase wooden dowels that are 1/8" to gauge "insertion depth" on the roaster, before I use the thermocouples. He explained that this is because wooden dowels are less expensive to test with, than actual thermocouples.

Unfortunately, I did not understand quite the relevance of the wooden dowels. Perhaps he meant to stick the wooden dowels in the exact position I'd place my thermocouples and activate the roaster drum to see if it's okay?

Also, position-wise, he recommended strut or vane contact minus 1/8". Seems way too close for comfort?? I figured you just stick the needle horizontally. I didn't know you'd have to tilt the probe needle exactly 1/8" from strut/vane. Super sensitive precision would be required for this, not to mention some crazy industrial strength glue that would permanently afix the probe 1/8" away from strut/vane. If the probe moves at all - even 1/8" in the wrong direction - I expect nothing less than disaster. However, he also mentioned he is not a roaster, so he's not 100% sure.

Finally, he recommended applying red nail polish on the thermocouple "sheath" to act as a "marker." What would I be marking and why?

Thanks again!

PS: I already bought two thermocouples, so I figured I'd go ahead and just install both ET and BT. I've always theorized that you only need the BT. I doubt that ET, BT, MET are all gonna be drastically inconsistent on a roast-to-roast basis. I imagine they'll all correlate pretty consistently.

Egads, I am a bit confused due to the lengthiness of the instructions, not to mention all the options.

I am assuming the following part is what you were suggesting for me? 2X for quantity to measure BT and ET? Crazy how the fittings cost more than the thermocouples!

Thermocouple Adaptor for
Quest Roaster – Direct
Replacement for stock
thermometer $40

Anyhoo, I shot him and email just to clarify. Let me know if I'm looking at the right part. Thanks!

Also very confused by the following directions, assuming I have the right part...

Quote
Slide the thermocouple in place until the tip (inside the roaster) is about 1/8” away from
the closest drum supporting strut. Rotate the drum by hand to ENSURE that any strut
does not contact the thermocouple. The thermocouple should extend into the drum as
far as possible WITHOUT contacting the strut. This should not be considered a trivial
exercise.
With the thermocouple properly positioned, apply a small dab of nail polish (or
equivalent) to the thermocouple probe where it exits the 7/16” gland nut on the outside
of the roaster. Snug up the 7/16” nut – maybe 1/2 turn past finger tight while orientating
the thermocouple in the desired position
.

What is the 7/16" gland nut? The whole time we're referring to 1/8"... and what does he mean by it "exiting" the gland nut? Isn't the thermocouple being inserted into the roaster?

And he also mentions a "1/2 turn past finger tight". So I assume I need some tool to turn it 180 degrees once my fingers no longer do the trick?

Also what is the point of nail polish? And where exactly do I apply it?

I am so sorry for the confusion, and thank you for all the help!

Okay, sorry I think I figured out what the "7/16" gland nut is, but I don't the "SS flat washer" in his accompanying pictures.

Quote
Install the new thermocouple adaptor and SS flat washer into the roaster and lightly
snug up the large hex body such that one of the flats is horizontal. This permits
maximum opening of the bean door.
