The ThermaQ Blue is an improved model of the trustworthy and battle-tested BlueTherm Duo.

Like its predecessor, The ThermaQ Blue is a convenient and easy to use solution for home and specialty roasters alike.

It has been improved with a slightly smaller size, and utilizes the Bluetooth Low Energy protocol for continuous, direct communication with Roastmaster. It is powered by 1 AA battery, boasts a 4000 hour battery life, and supports up to 2 K type thermocouples.

In order to use the ThermaQ Blue with Roastmaster, you’ll need:
  1. ThermaQ Blue (Available internationally from ThermoWorks)
  2. 1 or 2 K Style thermocouples
  3. Roastmaster Data Logging Option

    Hello,

We have been using the roastmaster for more than two years now.

We can’t roast without it any more. Therefore, we would like to have a extra set of hardware (ie: Terma Q). Please let us know where we can palce our order.

Besides, we bave two roasters. One 12 kg probat and one 30 kg Toper. Can we use rostmaster for both with just one Therma Q?

    Best,

    Armin Lamy

      Hi Armin

Great to hear!! You can order the ThermaQ here…http://www.thermoworks.com/ThermaQ-Blue?tw=RoastmasterApp.

Setup is easy, and performed entirely in Roastmaster. Just turn the ThermaQ on, and tap the “+” button in Roastmaster’s probe list. Choose “ThermaQ Blue”, and choose the unit in the list that pops up. Choose port 1 or 2, and you’re done.

Any other questions, just let me know.

      Danny

What is the minimum hardware/ios requirements to run the roastmaster app?

      Hi Larry.

Roastmaster is compatible with any iOS device running iOS 9.3.5 to 11.

Hey Danny. Just purchased an Artisan fluid-bed roaster, and watched the video you did with Ken regarding data logging. My question: will the ThermaQ Blue only support one temp probe? (e.g., bean mass temp). Or can I connect two (bean mass and exhaust air temp) and track both curves during the roast. Although I’m fairly new to roasting the profiles I’ve seen and read discussion about seem to track at least two (if not more) variables during the roast. I understand that Roastmaster will do this; my question is on the hardware/probe side. Suggestions?

      Hi Kurt

Sure – you can use two with one ThermaQ Blue. Each ThermaQ Blue can send two different channels of probe data to Roastmaster at the same time. Actually, you can use multiple TQB units for Nx2 channels of data at the same time if you really wanted to. Incidentally, those are the two temps I track on my drum roaster – granted, it’s a much different style of roasting, but having both is very helpful.

    Hi Danny,
Will the ThermaQ Wifi also work with Roastmaster?

      Hi Jorge

Sorry, no. ThermoWorks makes some really high quality hardware, so I’m sure it’s a great unit. But, I’ve grown a little wary of WiFi for general probe hardware. The tech side of it is somewhat of a stumbling block for folks who aren’t tech-savvy. Many folks hear WiFi, and equate that to the need for a dedicated internet connection, which many roasting environments don’t have. That, and Phidgets have problems with network bandwidth issues over WiFi. I think I’m sticking to Bluetooth LE from here on out – it’s much easier all the way around. I’ve got some Bluetooth LE hardware of my own in development with a pretty slick feature set.

      Kind regards,
      Danny

Is there a probe you recommend? They have several on their site.

For Thermoworks probes, Roastmaster only supports the ThermaQ Blue in the links above. That will hopefully change in the future, as their product line and SDK has advanced. But for now, that’s the only option from Thermoworks. It is also the easiest of any probe option – no configuration required.

Any chance any other Bluetooth probe would work with your system?

      Hi George

Most Bluetooth probes are thermistor style probes. I will definitely not entertain supporting those types of probes moving forward. I have in the past, and many roasters tried to use them on heavy duty, hotter machines, and they were simply not up to the task. It’s thermocouple only moving forward.

As far as thermocouple Bluetooth devices, unfortunately most do not offer an iOS SDK. Apple makes it prohibitively complex, IMO, and many manufacturers simply don’t want the headache.

For the DIY electronics builder crowd, the Roastmaster Bluetooth Protocol (RBP) is available for free use to build custom Bluetooth probes. That is an option for those folks. If you are interested in building your own, let me know at support@rainfroginc.com.

Otherwise, if you have a Bluetooth LE thermocouple device you are interested in, and know they provide a public iOS SDK (most do not), please sent me info at support@rainfroginc.com. Most folks are happy with the ThermaQ Blue, and it is a very well made, and accurate probe, so there is no strong push on my part to offer alternatives, but I’m happy to have a look.
