Setting Up the ThermaQ Blue
Setting Up a ThermaQ Blue for Data Logging
The ThermaQ Blue can be purchased from ThermoWorks.
- Attach one or two K-style thermocouple(s) to the ThermaQ Blue.
- Power the ThermaQ Blue device on.
- In the Probes list in Roastmaster, tap the + button to add a new Probe, and choose ThermaQ Blue.
- If you have not already purchased the Data Logging option, tap “Data Logging Store” and enable Data Logging. Roastmaster will guide you through the purchase.
- Choose the appropriate ThermaQ Blue device from the list.
- Enter the appropriate port, either 1 or 2.
- The Status field should display “Linked”, and report the current probe temperature.
- Save the new probe definition. It will now be available to use for data logging in the reading data curves of future roasts.
- Repeat for the second probe if desired.
Purchasing the ThermaQ Blue
The ThermaQ Blue can be purchased from ThermoWorks. They happily ship international orders, and offers a variety of shipping methods.
I have a ThermaQ Blu connected to a iPad, the ThermaQ app is reading temp, but when I try to add the probe in Roastmaster I’m not given any options to select on the ThermaQ list? How do I get the Roastmaster to see that there is a connected probe?
Hi Erik
Bluetooth LE peripherals will only accept incoming connections from one “central” device at a time. How the device defines a “connection” is up to the hardware/software of that device, i.e. how long before that connection times out. So, if you downloaded the ThermaQ app, and then tried to connect with Roastmaster, the ThermaQ app is probably holding onto the Bluetooth connection, even if the app is in the background. Try terminating the ThermaQ app by double tapping the home button, and swiping upward on the app. Then, Roastmaster should be able to see it. If not, try restarting the ThermaQ Blue by holding down on the button with the arrows, to shut it down, then tapping that button again to power back on. Then Roastmaster will be the first and only connection.
Let me know how it goes.
Danny
Hi Erik,
I am getting a fluid bed roaster soon that comes with an Apuhua 1300 probe / thermometer. Will Roastmaster work from that? Hard to tell if it meets your Phidget requirements.
Thanks, Chuck
Sorry – no, Roastmaster doesn’t natively support that probe. I’ve never seen the 1300, but from googling it appears to be a stand-alone hardware unit. If so (and it’s not integrated into the functioning of the roaster itself), the easiest solution for RM compatibility would be purchasing the ThermaQ Blue, and using that hardware in place of the 1300.
Kind regard
Danny
Hi Danny … it is now 3+ months later and I have my Artisan 6M in place. I just watched you on a 30-min video at CoffeeCrafters detail the whole process.
Here is my new question: I am going to order the new ThermaQ Blue, can you guide me to the right probe, knowing the Artistan 6M hopper, etc? That would help me, as I get this, Roastmaster, etc.
At that point, I need to run through a basic tutorial. I see you are building up an archive of docs. It’s a lot of things to juggle at once — from app to 2 variable controls on the 6M. I feel like an orchestra conductor. So I’m just hoping for a starting place. thanks so much !!
Hi Chuck.
Congrats on the new roaster. I have never installed a probe on the 6M, nor do I have one myself. So, I don’t have any personal experience to share. But, I’ve reached out to a 6M power roaster for input on probe size and installation specifics. I’ll let you know what I find out from him.
In the mean time, I’d start with a 1/8″ diameter probe that is long enough to reach the center of the bean mass. Now, with a fluid bed, this is not as straightforward as with a drum roaster where the beans tend to pile at a particular part of the drum. I’d try to find a good center point where the beans are the most dense. Again, personal experience here is lacking, because my roaster is a drum roaster, but I’d be inclined to think that a spot outside of the air stream would be best.
As for videos, start with the Roasting with Roastmaster series, and just go in order from 1 to 6. By design, they introduce concepts in a specific order, and build as you go. Even seasoned Roastmaster users could learn some info from the first few videos. I try to stick to the bare basics at first, so you can get up and running quickly. And, I’m always here for specific questions.
Hey Danny, Ken Lathrop of Coffee Crafters was able to tell me the type k probe that comes with his machine works with the ThermaQBlue, so I was able to get that. Cyber Monday, right??
But I have an iPad 4, which doesn’t upgrade to iOS 11. Am I missing out terribly?
No – you won’t miss out on anything important. Roastmaster 11 runs on iOS 9, 10 and 11. As long as your iPad is supports Bluetooth LE, it will communicate with the ThermaQ Blue.
Ipad Gen 2, IOS 9.3.5, I have Thema Q Blue followed all the directions but wont connect im going to use it on my artisan 3e
The Thermoworks app is probably running in the background. Bluetooth LE only allows 1 connection at a time – so if another app is using it (even in the background), Roastmaster can’t use it.
Terminate the Thermoworks app, and verify you have chosen Port 1 or 2 in Roastmaster. Lots of folks miss that one.
Let me know.
I’m having issues connecting iPad to ThermaQ Blue. Doesn’t show up as a connection option without using the Thermoworks app. I’ve already tried to connect with the Thermoworks app removed. No luck. Did you have any software workaround?
Has there been anyone with success using the ThermaQ Blue with RM?
Hi Steve
Sounds like you are encountering 2 things:
1) The ThermaQ Blue is Bluetooth LE – it does not require (in fact – cannot) be linked in Settings like old-style Bluetooth Devices. Roastmaster handles all connection details automatically, so the fact that it does not appear in settings is expected.
2) If the Thermoworks app is running – even in the background, Roastmaster will NOT be able to connect to it because the Thermoworks app is still using it. I know you said you removed it, but I wonder if you are basing your reasoning on seeing the device in settings.
Please restart the iPad, and make sure the Thermoworks app is gone or terminated from background. Then define the probe in Roastmaster, set its port to 1 or 2, and it should connect without any further fiddling on your part.
Let me know.
Danny
Will try. Thanks.
OK. Got it to work. For others with similar issue/concern: 1) Made sure Thermoworks app removed from iPad, 2) Hard reset of iPad, 3) Turn on ThermaQ, 4) Added new probes in RM, selecting ports 1 and 2 for two respective probes, 5) Added the probe references to each of my established profiles. With those steps all seems to work fine. Will know for sure when I roast next. Thanks Danny.
I used to successfully used the BlueTherm Duo, but the Thermoworks people are telling me the game has changed with the ThermaQ Blue.
Thermoworks people are telling me the game has changed with the ThermaQ Blue.
Any idea as to why ThremaQ Blue won’t link with RM? Have hard reset. No TQB App running. Probe shows unlinked and cannot select to link????
Steps for creating a Probe definition are:
If you saw your device in the list when doing this, and were able to choose it, it’s already successfully connected once.
If the probe shows as “Unlinked” thereafter, one of these three things is true:
Remember, Bluetooth LE only allows ONE connection. If you’ve accessed the ThermaQ Blue from another device, it’s probable that it is holding onto the connection in the background.
Can you email me a screenshot of your probe definition screen in Roastmaster? support@rainfroginc.com
How do i get a Scale to read uo to 50 max on the right side of graph for ROR readings ?
Danny,
I purchased Roastmaster years ago from your website before it was available on the App Store. I use a ThermoWorks data logger. When I go to the App Store, it won’t let me do anything but open the program – I expected to see a data logger update. How do I purchase the data logger or upgrade. Thanks

It should give you the option when you press the plus icon to add a probe, it will then give you the ability to purchase the extra nominally priced add on
