Hi a question for you, is there a wireless probe that works with roastmaster, and where can i find them.
Sorry the site is in a bit of disarray this week while I restructure. I’m adding a documentation section, and place for tutorial videos – trying to get things streamlined and organized.
As of version 4 on the app store, you can purchase the Data Logging option and operate with Phidget Temperature Sensors. There’s a parts guide here http://rainfroginc.com/wordpress/apps/roastmaster/introducing-version-4-0/ See the link in the Data Logging section.
At the moment, only K type thermocouples are supported. I plan on adding support for J type in the next update. Due to lack of USB in iOS, Phidgets is the only hardware capable of communicating with Roastmaster in an Apple-sanctioned way at the moment, but the temperature sensors perform beautifully.

P.S. I realize there is always a learning curve and this is no exception. But as I try to see if “any” of the attributes I entered in prior to roasting–roaster, bean, room temp, weight, etc.–none of these show up when I enter the “Roast Details” screen for the roast that just took place. Why is this? The thermocouple may not have been reading correctly (ala no “save” button) but the other attributes should have been saved and now displayed.
That should not be happening. Whenever you hit the “Save” button the database is saved. Roastmaster also saves the database at many different points during a roast to guard against possible crashes, etc. where the database might not have a chance to save.
I replied to your email. Can you try making a test roast, recording a few details, saving, closing, then opening it up again to verify that the details are still there?

We have an Artisan 6 on order and would like use your app. Which of the iCelsius models will work? I assume that the probe would go in the place of the factory supplied probe. Are there any issues in using an iPad with iOS 9?
I’d advise against Thermistor style probes like the iCelsius or Range for the Artisan. It’s temps get quite hot, and thermocouples are better suited for that roaster.
The manufacturer of the discontinued BluethermDuo is just about to publicly release the replacement for that unit. Roastmaster will support it just as soon as its public and I can upload an update to iTunes. I’d advise waiting for that, or using Phidgets if not.
As for iOS 9, as long as you are on the latest build (9.3.5 I believe), there are no Roastmaster issues that I am aware of.

Keep an eye on Thermoworks.com for the “ThermaQ Blue”. I’m not sure where you’re located, but it’s already on their UK site. According to my rep, it should hit their US site shortly.
I’ve finished adding support to Roastmaster – it’s working great with test unit. Once testing is done, I’ll release an update. So, hopefully very soon!

It’s the same scenario, but easier setup and uses Smart Bluetooth (LE). Roastmaster offers full support.
They have a meat kit available too – great for double duty when slow roasting pork shoulders. 🙂

Yes, those components (and the thermocouples) will form a full system that will work with the current version of Roastmaster (10.1).
However, the next version of Roastmaster (11) is currently in review with Apple, and introduces support for their VINT line of products, including the RTD sensors and their new (cheaper) SBC 4. The new SBC was not available for testing when I submitted to Apple, but the hardware should not matter – it should work out of the box with the upcoming Roastmaster 11.

In mean time, I buy a iCelsius for a iPad 3 and learn to use a software. Do I have for every single roasting choose a curve and próbę or it is possible to mark one probe as a default curve for all roasting.

You can define a “Curve Template” in a roast Profile, and set the probe there. Then, when you use that profile, Roastmaster will automatically create the curve you want, and link to the probe without any input on your part. In addition, Profiles are also the means to use to target reference curves.

Do you have probes that fit a 2006 Diedrich IR-7 ?

You’d have to decide and fit the thermocouples based on your Diedrich. Usually, that involves replacing a factory probe with a dual-tip thermocouple, and running one set of leads to the original factory hookup, and the other set to one of the hardware interface units that Roastmaster supports. Currently, that’s Phidgets (J & K) and the ThemaQBlue (K only). Roastmaster does support a few thermistor style probes, but those would not be robust enough for higher end machines like yours.

Only one probe, but 1/3 the price of the ThermaQ Blue so it would make a nice alternative.
They’ve sent me a bunch of promotional emails about it. I had previously decided to shy away from thermistor probes, since they can’t easily accommodate the higher temps of larger roasters. It’s tough for me to easily convey the message that they should only be used in lightweight home or sample roasters where the temps don’t get very high.
But, Thermoworks has some amazing engineers, and I’ll probably reach out to my rep for specs. I’m particularly interested in its MTTF (life expectancy). Thermistors don’t last as long as thermocouples, even under good conditions. But, since they seem to have engineered this for high heat, I probably shouldn’t discount it until I know more.
I think I’ll see what they have to say.
You may have been asked this before, but I haven’t found a response nor comment about it. I’m using a Sonofresco roaster. It comes with Bluetooth connectivity and onboard temperature probe. Maybe I’m missing something, and maybe it’s a software issue, but it seems all the pieces are in place for Roastmaster to work with this roaster, particularly capturing temperatures and elapsed times. Great roaster, but really wonky, limited software, so in my perfect world, there is a simple software solution to allow the onboard transceiver to talk with this iPad. Let me know.

I can’t remember if I’ve reached out to Sonofresco in the past about this or not. In any event, I sent them an email today. I would certainly be willing to add native support to Roastmaster. I constructed Roastmaster’s Bluetooth engine to make it easy to do things like this–I would just need to know their Bluetooth specifications and get their blessing.
I’ll reply back and let you know what they say.

No. I reached out to them the same day I responded to your post – back in June. My inquiry went unanswered. Those technical support departments are typically pretty small – one or two people. Might give some pull if you reach out to them with a similar request. The more they hear, the more they’ll be inclined to listen.
I’m roasting on a grill (just a starting point) for my own enjoyment and have been getting some outstanding results. Adding technology including this app. Would like to add environment probe and bean pile proble, but the grill basket spins on a rotissereie, is there a wireless thermocouple to attach to the grill basket?
Sorry no, not that I know of. There are means of building tiny battery-powered electronics with Roastmaster’s existing RDP (WiFi) and RBP (Bluetooth) communication protocols for rotating drums like the Gene Cafe roaster. The devices can attach to the outside of the drum and spin with it with the probe inserted through the drum wall. But, the electronics are segregated from the heat in that setup, because the heat is applied from the interior of the drum. I assume your rotisserie is fully enclosed in the grill, and any electronics would be exposed to the environmental heat of the grill. I can’t think of any way to route a thermocouple cable so that it wouldn’t become entangled in the spindle or spindle mounts.

I have an iPad 9.3.5 that I’m considering using with Roastmaster, and I know it’s compatible with the latest version, but is there any chance that RM would soon become incompatible with that iOS? As a daily Windows user I really don’t want to do an Apple upgrade any time in the near future, after also investing in a ThermaQ Blue.
Sorry – unfortunately, the next version of RM (targeted for Spring) will require iOS 10.1. Between iOS 9 and 11, Apple overhauled core features of the most basic view class that Roastmaster relies – UITableViewController. In the process, they fixed some bugs, and introduced others. The code was riddled with risky “patches” to circumvent old bugs in one OS, and new bugs in another – particularly with the search feature. So I dropped 9, and cleaned up the code for the coming release.
To my knowledge, though, if your iOS device is not compatible with the LATEST version of an app, the App Store is supposedly smart enough to install the last compatible PREVIOUS release automatically. Now – I can’t guarantee this – only say that this is how it is supposed to work and has worked in the past. The install process from a development perspective is much different, so I can’t speak from experience.
Hi, my friend bought this app and uses it in Chinese. Recently he downloaded it on his phone but it is showing in English and there doesn’t seem to be an option to change languages. He can’t read English. Is there still a Chinese version? Or is there a way to change the language?
Regarding the app itself, Roastmaster will use whatever language iOS is telling it to use. That is controlled via the iOS Settings app in “General > Language and Region”. Yes, Roastmaster fully supports Simplified Chinese on both iPhone and iPad. It does not, however, support the Traditional or Hong Kong variants. So if one of these is chosen on the iPhone, that would be the reason.
iOS, though, lets you set a preference hierarchy of languages for situations like this. You can tap “Other Languages…” to add Simplified Chinese to the lists of languages, and drag the rows to set the order of preference. So, for instance, if the phone is set to use Traditional Chinese, he could add Simplified Chinese via “Other Languages”, set the preference order so that it appears AFTER Traditional Chinese, but BEFORE English, and Roastmaster should run in Simplified Chinese, while the phone itself uses Traditional.
This applies to all parts of Roastmaster with the exception of the “Help and Knowledgebase” section of the app. For that, Roastmaster first uses the language of the iOS device as the default. It is possible, though, to change that within Roastmaster. From the main Roastmaster menu, tap “Help”, and then tap the globe in the toolbar at the bottom. Simplified Chinese can be chosen from there if it is not already selected.

Have you tried any of the suggestions (Range App blocking access, or microphone turned off in iOS Settings > Privacy > Microhone > Roastmaster)? And, are you showing “Unlinked” in a Probe definitions screen?
Also – was a little confused about generic – is this a true Range probe?

I’ve searched everywhere I can think of with the terms Roastmaster and ‘Aillio’ / ‘Bullet’ but have come away empty. Is it possible to use RM with a Bullet R2? Is anyone aware of any iOS software that works with either the Bullet R1 or R2? I’m desperately trying to NOT have to buy a laptop (or any new computer) just to log roasting.
I’ve tried to get the ball rolling for supporting the Bullet in Roastmaster (see above) via one of Roastmaster’s existing DIY protocols (RDP or RBP), but they seem uninterested. I an beginning manufacturing on Bluetooth hardware for Thermocouples and use with Roastmaster. After that is released, I will look back into support for the Bullet and other USB enabled roasters with a similar type of hardware. For the time being, there is no out of the box solution. Possible? Yes – via one of those Opensource protocols I mentioned, but it would require programming and electronics building…sorry.

Roastmaster lets you define roasting curves and record temperature data to them during a roast.

I’ve bought both data logging and the roastmaster app. There’s a USB cable to attach on to the roaster. I have tried them on 2 China made roasters, how do you suggest I get the app running? Abit confused. So far no connections have worked.
The USB in iOS is not standard USB – Apple has historically limited the protocols it will pass to software (camera, flash drives, etc.)…and not available on all models anyway. For this reason, my focus of development is Bluetooth LE…I’m producing proprietary Bluetooth LE hardware and plan to begin manufacturing shortly. I don’t currently have any plans to support USB style connections, if that’s even possible with USB-C style iPads. Sorry.
Is there a guide on how to connect the iPad to phidget 1048? Tried a USB to lightning cable does not work, no link to the probe. The thermocouple is connected to a phidget 1048 SBC3 board.
Phidgets need a host that bridges the gap between USB and iOS (mostly) Wireless architecture. There are diagrams and explanations here… https://rainfroginc.com/documentation/how-do-phidgets-work/
FOR THEIR LEGACY HARDWARE: Essentially, it should be a laptop or one of Phidgets’ SBC units (Single Board Computer). The 1048 is the legacy style temp sensor – you’d need an SBC compatible with that. Those are NOT listed on their website at the moment…guess they’ve discontinued those. The only SBC they show is the VINT model for used with their newer VINT temp sensors. Roastmaster supports this, but you’d need a new temp sensor.
NEWER PHIDGET PRODUCTS: They do have a new wireless VINT Hub – the coming version of RM will support that. That would support a newer VINT temp sensor, without the higher price of the SBC and the overhead of setup…https://www.phidgets.com/?tier=3&catid=2&pcid=1&prodid=1143 I’m going into beta in a few days with the latest version. If you decide to get one of those, let me know and I could set you up with a beta version to support it until the new version is live.

Sorry, I am not familiar with this roaster. If it uses Phidgets for USB connectivity, then yes – you could use it with Roastmaster, provided you add a Phidget SBC or a laptop as a network host. iOS does not have “true” USB connectivity (even the USB C iPads), so connection needs to occur wirelessly over WiFi. I’ll be putting release notes together as I have time to write them out. I’m trying to unbury myself at the moment. 🙂 Thankfully, I don’t think there’s a lot that needs in-depth explanation, which is ironic…this is easily the biggest update RM has ever seen. But, the bulk of that work was under the hood. I redid data logging from the ground up to be a lot nicer to the battery, much faster code-wise, but most importantly to support what I wanted to do with varying Curve scales. I’ll be writing documentation for those at some point. Also, probably some for the Siri/Workflow integration, though only a small percentage of users would care much about that…that’s more for larger shops.
I’m working on the RBP documentation now. Thats FOB. Roastmaster now has a standard open source protocol for temperature readings over Bluetooth LE. I want to get that data sheet available for manufacturers. Now that many have moved over to adding Bluetooth LE capabilities to their roasters for temperatures, out-of-the-box support for Roastmaster is embarrassingly easy for them to implement.
Once that’s done, I’ll start playing catch-up. In the mean time, you can see what’s new in the app itself…go to the About screen and tap the “What’s New” button. That info is also on the iTunes description. Any questions about a feature, though…don’t hesitate to ask.

Greetings! I’m new to Roastmaster. I’m using a type K TC connected to an Isolated Thermocouple Phidget plugged into port 0 of a VINT Hub Phidget connected to a USB port on a MacBook Pro(Early 2011, 13 inch) running macOS 10.13.6, connected to my WiFi server, with the Phidgets22 package installed running the Phidget Control Panel. I’m running Roastmaster 11 with the data logging option on an iPad Air2 (Model MGTX2LL/A), ios 14.4.2. connected to my WiFi server. The Phidget Control Panel sees the Phidget TC and my NETGEAR WiFi server. Roastmaster indicates the Phidget Temperature Sensor is unlinked. Is the sensor name arbitrary? What do I use for Network Server ID? (NETGEAR80-5G or “serial” is what?) Thanks!

You don’t need to fool with the Sensor Name. The “Network Server ID” in the “Network Server” tab of the Phidget Control Panel is required, though, but can be any arbitrary value. However, that field is sensitive to certain characters. You should stick to alphanumeric characters, and avoid any special characters – especially avoid single and double quotes. “Herschel MacBook Pro” would be a good choice. Also, make sure a valid port is entered (mine is 5661), and that “Webserver” and “Dictionaries” are both disabled.
Finally, make sure the “Network Server” is running – click “Start Network Server” if necessary. That is necessary for communication. Once that is running, RM should be able to see it as long as both the iOS device and the MacBook are joined to the same network.
Oh – one more thing. Roastmaster iOS 11 is an old version. It’s possible that it doesn’t like talking to a newer Phidgets Control Panel. I’d suggest making sure you have upgraded to Roastmaster for iOS 14. Then, there should not be any compatibility issues.

Recently I found something strange using Data Logging.
When Delta curve reaches its peak, the ROR value is not at its highest value.
Rather, the ROR value reaches its maximum number when the delta curve is being declined.
There is a time gap between Delta Curve and ROR value.
I am little frustrated which is correct. Delta Curve? or RoR Value?

Hi Jesse. I’m been well, thanks! How are you?
The Delta values displayed at the TOP of the Analyzer screen report the PROBE deltas, and are real-time values. In other words, they are instant. When they are refreshed, they sample the precise probe temp at the moment they are updated, and the find the temperature that the probe was at the exact time interval set in preferences, e.g. 1 second, 5 seconds, 10 seconds, etc. Since probes temperatures are updated every one-half second…those numbers are extremely precise.
The Delta Curves, however, work similarly, but rather than report the PROBE deltas, they report the CURVE deltas. Curve nodes are not captured as ofter as probe samples are taken – they are captured at the frequency defined in the Curve itself – usually every 10 seconds or so. Because of this difference in sampling frequency (0.5 seconds vs 10 seconds), there is bound to be a lag between the two values between node captures if temperatures are changing quickly. In addition, if you have specified a “Rolling Average” smoothing algorithm for the Delta Curves, there is even more of a lag because the rolling average for the most recent Node cannot be taken until the NEXT node is captured – effective doubling the time lag.
In short, the Delta values shown at the top of the screen are more precise at any given moment – trust those. The Delta Curves are more for long term visualization of the temperature changes. If you are looking for an instant way to predict temperatures – try using the Temperature Project feature in conjunction with a probe. Tap the “Crosshair” toolbar button while your Curve is selected and the roast is in progress. Those projection markers work off of the Probe – and are a very good way to tell where the roast temperature will likely be at a specific point in time AHEAD of the current time.

The “Interval” setting in the “Probe” section of a Curve details screen specifies the time interval in seconds that Roastmaster uses to store the reading of the probe in the curve as Nodes. For example, a setting of “5” indicates that probe data will be stored every 5 seconds, yielding a Curve with Nodes every 5 seconds.
Internally, the readouts, temperature projects and delta indicators use a real-time cache – capturing readings twice per second. But, that many nodes is not ideal for storage in a database that may grow very large. In addition, some roasters use manual data logging for their sample roasters, and automatic data logging for their production roasters. The function of Nodes must work equally well in both scenarios. For this reason Roastmaster lets you specify the time interval, and limits it so that nodes are not overwhelming.

We’ve used the app for years now with over 8000 batches logged. We may be upgrading our machine to a Loring and would love to keep using the app. Have you seen folks using the app with Lorings?

I reached out to Loring last month. Since Apple has been slowly relaxing their grip on the USB protocols they allow into iOS, I wanted to explore the possibility of adding native support for their roasters via USB. They advised me, though, that their roasters do no share any information over USB It’s been on my todo list to see if there’s another means of reading data, Bluetooth perhaps. I know that Loring has their own profiling software. For that reason, they may be hesitant to open their roasters up to other software, in which case it’s a moot point. But…if you go that route, and have a Loring representative, please ask them what the possibilities are. I’d be interested in hearing from another source on this.
To directly answer your question…yes, I’ve talked to many users throughout the years who have upgraded to a Loring roaster. Roastmaster can certainly be used alongside a Loring, but I’m assuming you’re speaking specifically about automated data logging. Unfortunately, at the moment, the only way of integrating Roastmaster in a data logging scenario, is to either install an extra dedicated probe, or decide if it’s safe to splice into an existing probe with leads for hardware that Roastmaster supports. That’s a touchy decision, and depends on the hardware and wiring itself, but it can be safely done if you honor the principles of thermocouple voltage.
