    Sound Preference Bug

Nobody has officially registered this bug, but it may have been noticed. Version 1.1.0 does not correctly honor the preference setting concerning whether or not Roastmaster should play sounds.

iOS 4 was a major upgrade, and Apple seems to have made a lot of under-the-hood changes. One of the areas affected was the audio system. After I submitted version 1.1 to the App Store, while it was still in review, I found that while in Roastmaster on iOS4, if you received a text message or phone call, Roastmaster’s audio did not function for the remainder of the time it was launched. This, obviously, would be quite a problem for people who use the alarm function.

I pulled the update from review, and rewrote the entire sound engine from scratch. This was much easier than I expected, given the improvements Apple made behind the scenes to its audio architecture. I tested all aspects of it well, from receiving calls and texts, both during a session, and after being moved to the background – everything worked great. Everything, that is, except the one thing I forgot about – the preference setting. I had neglected to wire it to the new sound engine.

Sorry to any who might prefer to have the sounds turned off. I didn’t discover this until after the update was approved and live. This will be fixed in the next update.

    with official iOS 4 support!

As suspected – quite a bit changed in the internal workings of iOS 4. A few things that worked great in iOS3, showed bugs in the new OS.

    Fixes in version 1.1.0…

    • Added multitasking support
    • Added hi-res art for the iPhone 4 Retina Display
    • Fixed an iOS 4 bug that prevented users from adding a new roaster
    • Overhauled the sound engine to fix an iOS 4 bug that would render Roastmaster unable to play sounds after an incoming phone call during a Roastmaster session.
    • Miscellaneous animation and screen redraw fixes

Mostly under-the-hood tweaks, though, there could have possibly, perhaps, been maybe a typo or two.

Fixed an inheritance bug that was never formally logged by anyone, but might present itself in rare situations.

and ready for sale as of today! Yes, of course, I bought the first copy. I, ahem… had to make sure it downloaded and installed correctly.

I haven’t slept well over the last week – nervous about how it will be received. Unfortunately, the end of beta-testing and what worked out to be the release date, were less than ideal. With iOS 4 only a week away, I’m nervous about what changes Apple will surprise developers with. The last few weeks since Apple released its gold master build of iOS 4 to developers has been filled with late nights and last minute fixes so Roastmaster could be released. Plus I know there will be unknowns… Time to go download the gold master and see what’s changed.

  • It’s finished!

    It’s finished!

Well over a year, and thousands of test roasts later, Roastmaster is finished!

I’ve been a home coffee roast for years, and I finally grew tired of the index cards. They’re great in theory – a record of all your roasts so you can look up… wait – there’s the problem… “Look up”. Outside of coding, I’m an impatient person by nature – I wanted the information assimilated and presented to me – without intervention on my part.

…I wanted to say goodbye to the stepstool that helped me sift through bag after bag of beans on the cluttered top shelf, hoping I still had a little of the one I wanted.

…I wanted an alarm that would alert me when key points in a roast were approaching.

So… I made it. I love it, and hope you will as well. It’s finally done, and in the wee morning hours of May 29, I uploaded it to iTunes Connect to await review and, hopefully, approval…
